The Alternative Grant program invited people in Los Angeles to propose gardening and urban agriculture projects that would benefit their community. Ron Finley, a South Central Los Angeles-based renegade gardener, helped launch the program and hosted the award ceremony.
Five finalists were selected to share their ideas with the Venice community at the Alternative Apparel store; the recipient of the first Alternative Grant was Westminster Elementary (WE) Garden.
For Volunteer Day at WE Garden, members of the Alternative team and students of Westminster Elementary helped plant and tend to trees around the campus, seed vegetables and build beds for seasonal crops with guidance from their Master Gardener Nora Dvosin.
“Gardening is the most therapeutic and defiant act you can do, especially in the inner city. Plus, you get strawberries.”
